چکیده

Maximally Smooth Functions (MSFs) are a form of constrained functions in which there no inflection points or zero crossings high order derivatives. Consequently, they have applications to signal recovery experiments where signals interest expected be non-smooth features masked by larger smooth foregrounds. They can also act as powerful tool for diagnosing the presence systematics. The nature MSFs makes fitting these non-trivial task. We introduce maxsmooth, an open source package that uses quadratic programming rapidly fit MSFs. demonstrate efficiency and reliability maxsmooth comparison commonly used routines show we reduce time approximately two orders magnitude. implement with Partially Functions, useful describing elements structure This work has been motivated problem foreground modelling 21-cm cosmology. discuss cosmology highlight this examples using data from Experiment Detect Global Epoch Reionization Signature (EDGES) Large-aperture Dark Ages (LEDA) experiments. sinusoidal systematic EDGES log-evidence difference $86.19\pm0.12$ when compared pure fit. applied LEDA first paper identify is pip installable available download at: https://github.com/htjb/maxsmooth

Fitting a Cm - Smooth Function to Data

Suppose we are given a finite subset E ⊂ R and a function f : E → R. How to extend f to a C function F : R → R with C norm of the smallest possible order of magnitude? In this paper and in [20] we tackle this question from the perspective of theoretical computer science. We exhibit algorithms for constructing such an extension function F , and for computing the order of magnitude of its C norm....

21 cm cosmology in the 21st century.

Imaging the Universe during the first hundreds of millions of years remains one of the exciting challenges facing modern cosmology. Observations of the redshifted 21 cm line of atomic hydrogen offer the potential of opening a new window into this epoch. This will transform our understanding of the formation of the first stars and galaxies and of the thermal history of the Universe. A new genera...

Quantum Money and Scalable 21-cm Cosmology

This thesis covers two unrelated topics. The first part of my thesis is about quantum money, a cryptographic protocol in which a mint can generate a quantum state that no one can copy. In public-key quantum money, anyone can verify that a given quantum state came from the mint, and in collision-free quantum money, even the mint cannot generate two valid quantum bills with the same serial number...

MITEoR: a scalable interferometer for precision 21 cm cosmology

We report on the MIT Epoch of Reionization (MITEoR) experiment, a pathfinder low-frequency radio interferometer whose goal is to test technologies that improve the calibration precision and reduce the cost of the high-sensitivity 3D mapping required for 21 cm cosmology. MITEoR accomplishes this by using massive baseline redundancy, which enables both automated precision calibration and correlat...
